For instance, these policies show how #justice can support resilience: 🇨🇴 Colombia’s Constitutional Court recognized climate-induced internal displacement as grounds for special protection, guaranteeing victims’ rights and assistance and highlighting the experience of climate #displacement. 🇸🇱 Sierra Leone’s dual Customary Land Rights and National Land Commission laws ensure Free Prior Informed Consent for industrial development projects and empower more women to participate in community land management. 🇰🇪 In Kenya, environmental #HumanRights defenders have secured public participation in the creation of laws, regulations, and guidelines for logging activities, therefore increasing transparency and accountability to local communities. This week in #Colombia, FPP's partner PCN - Proceso de Comunidades Negras, presented evidence before UN's Business and Human Rights Working Group on violations to the #HumanRights of Black and Afro-descendant communities in the North of #Cauca caused by the #Sugarcane industry. PCN denounced before the UN Working Group the plundering of their rivers and the illegal privatisation of water sources for sugar cane plantations. Today the territories of the Black communities are a sea of sugar cane. Since the construction of the La Salvajina dam, monocultures have increased, even in what used to be water reserves zones and common lands used by the Black communities. Join Shana Tabak, Advisor to the Climate Migration Council, at #COP29 as she presents: Human rights and climate justice: Latin American and Caribbean perspectives on human mobility in climate adaptation and loss and damage Friday, November 15 at 11:30 am at the Climate Change and Human Mobility Pavilion, hosted by IOM - UN Migration. Latin American and Caribbean countries have been highly active in efforts to integrate human mobility in climate adaptation and loss and damage considerations. The side event will feature a high-level conversation on strategies and opportunities to better account for and address human mobility leveraging Latin American and Caribbean experiences and human rights imperatives. These countries have led the way in integrating human mobility into climate adaptation strategies. 🇺🇳 As the United Nations High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development (#HLPF2024) begins today, we are inspired by stories of refugee leaders like the Director General of Refugiados Unidos Lublanc Prieto. 🌱 This year’s HLPF provides a crucial platform to advance Sustainable Development Goal 16 (#SDG16), aiming to promote #peace, #JusticeForAll, and #inclusive institutions at all levels. 💪 Lublanc is working to achieve #JusticeForAll by providing legal services and community development to migrant and displaced populations in #Colombia 🇨🇴. 💼 Her #JusticeJourney started with the dream of becoming a lawyer and bringing #justice to vulnerable populations. 🎤 In our recent #WhatDoesJusticeMean interview, Lublanc says, “This is my life. RET and Action Against Hunger joined forces to represent the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) for the Defense of the Rights of Refugee, Migrants and Displaced Populations in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC WDN Coalition) in the Third Thematic Consultation of the Cartagena +40 process focused on forced displacement and disasters, which was held on June 19 and 20, 2024 in Bogota, Colombia. This event has been crucial in addressing the challenges and solutions related to displacement in the region. The effects of climate change and disasters increase the vulnerability of displaced populations, and it is essential to integrate gender, intersectionality and interculturality perspectives into our actions. #collaboration #civilsociety #humanrights

CBID successes: In 2023, a consortium of organisations of persons with disabilities in Guatemala, which received the CBM community based inclusive development CBID Innovation Fund, signed an agreement with the Guatemala Electoral Authority, a crucial step to ensure that persons with disabilities were included in the 2023 electoral processes. The two parties worked together to: ♿Make polling stations accessible to enable persons with disabilities to cast their votes. 🗳️ Introduce tools that guarantee the privacy and secrecy of the ballot. ℹ️ Produce information materials in appropriate media and formats for persons with disabilities to learn about the election process. The Guatemala General elections were conducted on 25 June 2023, and a second round on 20 August 2023, ushered in a new government. New Accountability Note: Collective Protection for Communities and Rights Defenders At Risk In Colombia’s Pacific region, ACADESAN, the Community Council of the San Juan River, defends the rights of its 72 Afro-Colombian communities in areas affected by armed conflict. Like rights defenders around the world, ACADESAN and its communities face violence, forced displacement, and reprisals. Like many governments, the Colombian government has responded by committing to protect at-risk defenders, mainly with measures focused on individuals. But it also has some commitments to broader protection measures. ACADESAN calls for bottom-up approaches to protection of the communities it represents, and has worked to hold the government accountable for delivering on its legal and policy commitments to collective protection. The Accountability Note tells the story of ACADESAN’s breakthrough advocacy campaign for collective protection in English for the first time.
